19 Nov A word of advice to my small business owner connections…
Focus on getting the basics right, before trying to implement complicated strategies to grow your business.
They may seem obvious, but it surprises me how many small businesses don’t deliver on all, or some of them.
People may not tell you, but it leaves a bad impression and they are less likely to work with you or refer others to your business.
It’s hard to build anything on shaky foundations, so ensure you have these basics in place in your business first:
- Communicate clearly – don’t make assumptions and check understanding, before and during the customer journey. People like to know what to expect and what is happening.
- Do what you say – when someone says they’ll do something, I expect them to do it, or at least let me know if they can’t.
- Be punctual – always aim to be on time. Persistent lateness, or even missed meetings, screams disorganisation and is disrespectful of others time.
- Be great at what you do – make sure you are great at whatever it is you are selling. You want your customers to be wowed, or at least happy with the work you deliver. No-one will refer to someone who delivers half-hearted, lack lustre work.
- Be kind – gossiping about your competitors and colleagues can appear mean-spirited and unkind. It makes me wonder what you’ll say about me behind my back!
Do you have any others that you’d add to this list?
