Don’t measure your own business journey and results against what you think your competition is doing!

Don’t measure your own business journey and results against what you think your competition is doing!

One of the lessons I’ve learnt from 15 years of coaching small business owners is that no journey is straight forward and every business owner has their ups and downs – it’s just that most only share about the ups!

So you only hear about the amazing things going on, and you never hear about:

  • the lost sales
  • the nightmare HR issue they’re dealing with from a disgruntled employee
  • the 1 star Google review left by someone they’ve never even worked with
  • the cashflow drying up and the constant struggle to make payroll every month
  • the working over the weekends and missing out on family time
  • their health suffering as they haven’t got time for exercise and lunch tends to be grabbed from a petrol station each day
  • the feeling of it all being too much some days, and not being able to face dealing with the strategic stuff, they instead busy themselves with the menial tasks

After all, who wants to share about the losses and the bad days?

So when you next see your competitors share about their wins and successes, remember:
“Don’t compare somebody else’s highlight reel with your own behind the scenes footage”

Focus on your own goals, your own strengths and your own business, and let others focus on theirs, knowing that they too will have their bad days.
