25 May You can’t blame Covid for this…
This weekend I took a trip to Birmingham, and it was sad to see lots of shutters down for those stores not re-opening: Debenhams, John Lewis, TopShop, Gap, Warehouse, Oasis, Carluccios, to name a few.
I guess it’s the same in your local town / city?
Some are lost forever, some are streamlining their retail presence, and others have been taken over by online businesses to operate in a completely different way.
Hopefully, in the next year or so, we’ll start to see a re-emerging of very different looking high street / shopping centres – probably focused more on leisure and hospitality than retail.
As much as you may want to blame this (and many other things!) on Covid, it’s a sign of changing customer behaviour. It may have happened more quickly because of Covid, but it would have happened.
Some big high street names will be flourishing in the next year as they adapt to changing customer needs and wants, and I expect more will continue to disappear as they try to carry doing what they’ve always done.
My message to you is this – this changing behaviour is not just on the high street – it’s everywhere, and it will impact your business, whether you realise it or not.
